Airfreight rates climbed in September as the market approached its fourth-quarter surge. Hong Kong-North America routes saw rates rise to $7.02 per kilogram, while Hong Kong-Europe lanes also posted gains. Year-over-year, North America lanes jumped 31% and European routes climbed 8%, driven by elevated jet fuel costs tied to Middle East geopolitical tensions. Demand strengthened as shippers built inventory ahead of peak season. Early October data showed further acceleration, with the global Baltic Air Freight Index climbing 5% in seven days. Infrastructure-related volumes supported North America rates, though EU e-commerce import charges dampened European demand. Jet fuel prices remain up more than 100% annually, though current rates have yet to fully reflect those increases. East Asian departure points showed mixed performance.
