Airbus is conducting extensive ground tests of the A350 freighter's Main-Deck Cargo Door and Cargo Loading System using large-scale physical test rigs. These evaluations validate performance before preliminary flights and certification and confirm the aircraft can handle its designed 111-tonne payload capacity.
The testing program uses two primary demonstration setups: the Cargo Door Actuation System Integration Bench and the Cargo Zero CLS test demonstrator.
The MDCD arrived at Airbus's Toulouse final assembly facility April 21, with installation on prototype MSN 700 beginning April 22. The system features an all-electric drive using Geared Rotary Actuators capable of opening or closing the door within 60 seconds, even in 40-knot wind conditions.
A patented latching mechanism reduces parts count compared to conventional systems, delivering savings in space, weight and cost. The 170-inch wide clear opening represents a significant cargo capacity improvement. Airbus targets second-half 2027 market entry.
