Alabama Man Pleads Guilty in Counterfeit Stamp Trafficking Scheme

A 48-year-old Alabama resident has pleaded guilty to money laundering in a fraud operation involving counterfeit postage stamps sourced from China. Kevin Douglas Padgett admitted to conspiring with John Patrick Best, 55, beginning in January 2024 to purchase and resell nearly 6.5 million fake stamps domestically. The pair established a Georgia-based shipping supply company and opened related bank accounts to facilitate the scheme. Best leveraged media industry connections to advertise and sell the counterfeit stamps through online marketplaces, while Padgett handled packaging and distribution from Alabama post offices. Authorities seized an additional 544,596 stamps before they entered circulation. The operation generated at least $1 million in illegal proceeds. Both defendants face maximum sentences of 20 years imprisonment, plus substantial fines and restitution obligations.
