Construction of Alabama Port Authority's inland container facility in Montgomery is progressing on schedule, with grading and utility work completed and rail infrastructure now under development. The $100 million, 272-acre terminal will function as an inland extension of the Port of Mobile, connecting central Alabama shippers directly to the coast via CSX rail service. At full capacity, the facility will handle 60,000 container units annually, or approximately 30,000 40-foot-equivalent containers. It will operate five days weekly with daily express service between Montgomery and Mobile. The terminal will feature over 25,000 feet of track, including two 3,500-foot process tracks and container storage, alongside truck access and maintenance buildings. Port officials expect operations to commence in early 2027, providing manufacturers and exporters in the region an alternative to truck drayage while supporting supply-chain efficiency across Alabama's industrial corridor.
