Amazon Expands Alternative Delivery Methods With Bullet Trains in Japan, E-Cargo Bikes in U.S.

Amazon has launched alternative delivery solutions on two continents to accelerate deliveries while cutting emissions. In Japan, the company partnered with three railway operators to move packages via Shinkansen bullet trains. Service connects Greater Tokyo fulfillment centers to Hakodate, Aomori and Kanazawa on high-speed routes. Operations began in March on the Tohoku and Tohoku-Hokkaido lines, expanding to the Hokuriku route in May. The trains travel at speeds up to 200 mph, enabling same-day delivery across central and northern Japan. This reduces carbon emissions and road congestion compared to truck transport. Amazon is also deploying e-cargo bikes across more than 50 European cities and testing them in Washington, D.C. In the U.S., the company launched e-cargo bike service in Culver City, California last week with 25 vehicles. Independent delivery partners operate the bikes, with full capacity expected within four to six weeks. Burbank rollout is planned within weeks, with both California operations permanent.
