Amazon Supply Chain Services has opened its less-than-truckload freight network to businesses beyond its own operations.
The move follows Chief Executive Andy Jassy's explanation that Amazon built its logistics infrastructure to serve its retail operations but now intends to monetize excess capacity by serving external customers.
The LTL offering represents Amazon's latest push into the broader logistics market. By leveraging its established network and transportation assets, the company can provide freight services to third-party shippers.
The expansion positions Amazon as a direct competitor to traditional freight brokers and LTL carriers. Industry observers expect the move will intensify competition in the less-than-truckload segment.
