Roger Harris will step down as Amtrak President on July 31, the railroad announced May 19. William Herrmann will assume the interim presidency while the board searches for a permanent chief executive. Harris departs after leading the carrier to record ridership and revenue levels, alongside major service launches including NextGen Acela and Mardi Gras service. The Portal North Bridge capital project also advanced during his tenure. Herrmann, a 27-year Amtrak veteran, brings extensive background in legal, human resources, and labor matters. Board Chair Tony Coscia said Herrmann will maintain operational continuity while supporting the workforce and ensuring reliable service delivery. The transition follows Stephen Gardner's March 2025 departure as CEO after 16 years leading the passenger railroad.
