Meteorologists expect the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season to produce 11 to 16 named storms, with 4 to 7 hurricanes and 2 to 4 major hurricanes rated Category 3 or stronger. Colorado State University forecasts 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes—slightly below the historical average of 14, 7, and 3 respectively. An emerging El Niño pattern should increase Atlantic wind shear and suppress overall storm development. However, unusually warm ocean temperatures in the Gulf and Atlantic could still trigger rapid intensification. AccuWeather warns of 3 to 5 direct U.S. impacts, particularly threatening the northern Gulf Coast, northeastern Gulf, and Carolinas. Trucking fleets should not assume reduced storm counts will lower operational disruption risk. Fewer, more intense storms could still cause significant freight market volatility.
