Freight volumes continued climbing in August even as consumer sentiment deteriorated, creating a mixed picture for the logistics sector heading into fall 2026.
Global air cargo demand rose 6% year-over-year last month, extending a strong summer streak. Less-than-truckload carrier Saia reported accelerating tonnage growth as year-over-year comparisons eased.
On the international front, Mexican vehicle exports to the United States grew in August. The U.S. accounted for 76.3% of Mexico's auto shipments through the first eight months of 2026.
This freight strength contrasts with Federal Reserve data showing deteriorating consumer household finances in August. More U.S. consumers also expressed pessimism about the year ahead. The elevated freight rates reflect the ongoing strength in cargo demand.
