Baltimore Port Worker Killed in Equipment Accident at Dundalk Terminal

A 53-year-old longshoreman died Monday after being struck by a crane boom at the Port of Baltimore's Dundalk Marine Terminal. It was the facility's first fatality in two decades. David Deon Smith, an International Longshoremen's Association Local 333 member, was struck during cargo-handling operations shortly after 9 a.m. First responders transported him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration launched investigations into the incident. Port officials mourned Smith's passing, with Maryland Port Administration Executive Director Jonathan Daniels calling ILA members "the backbone of the Port of Baltimore." The Dundalk facility, operated by Ports America, handles containers, breakbulk, steel, and project cargo across 13 berths equipped with four container cranes.
