Charter rates for Bangkokmax container vessels have climbed 18% over the past year to nearly $32,000 per day, driven by a shortage of available tonnage in the segment. The constrained supply stems from minimal newbuilding orders since 2023, with only three vessels delivered so far in 2026. Intra-Asia trade growth is pushing demand for 1,600-1,900 teu ships higher, with resale values ranging from $35m to $45m depending on age and country of build. Recent fixtures underscore the tightness: CMA CGM fixed a 2006-built vessel at $34,000 daily for 11-13 months, while OOCL and Maersk secured tonnage at $25,000 daily. The shortage is expected to persist into mid-2027, with only 12 deliveries scheduled for the remainder of 2026. Major carriers including HMM and independent owners are actively ordering replacement vessels, with 252 Bangkokmax ships now on order.
