The Department of Energy's weekly benchmark diesel price climbed this week, following a 9-cent-per-gallon jump in ultra-low sulfur diesel futures on the CME commodity exchange. The price remains approximately 25 cents per gallon below its all-time high of $6. The benchmark serves as the basis for most fuel surcharges. Diesel futures experienced relative stability after surging more than 21 cents per gallon on October 13. The October surge was driven by market recognition that near-term supply interventions would have minimal impact. Volatility returned when unconfirmed reports emerged of Qatar and Pakistan proposing peace negotiations. The reports triggered sharp downward pressure on crude prices. Analysts noted the market's sensitivity to geopolitical developments. Even unconfirmed diplomatic signals moved prices significantly.
