Lawmakers introduced legislation this week to combat schemes targeting truckers with fake federal correspondence demanding payment for services provided free by regulators. The Stop Scamming Truckers Act, sponsored by Representatives Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Dave Taylor, requires third-party companies sending USDOT-related documents to include prominent disclosure statements. Fraudulent letters mimicking official federal agency materials have wasted owner-operators' and carriers' time and money through unnecessary renewal and registration fees. Under the measure, disclosures must appear in at least 12-point font on the first page of communications, or without scrolling for digital correspondence. These disclosures must explicitly state the sender is a private company unaffiliated with the FMCSA or DOT. The bill also prohibits companies from using federal seals, logos or insignia that could imply government connection. Enforcement provisions create a private right of action for affected recipients, addressing a problem that disproportionately harms small trucking businesses.
