BLS Revises Transportation & Warehousing Employment Up by 135,100 Workers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics found significantly more workers in Transportation & Warehousing during March 2026 than previously estimated. The preliminary benchmark report released Friday revised the baseline model upward by 135,100 positions—a 2% adjustment, the second-largest sectoral revision. This discovery represents a notable divergence from recent labor market trends. Overall private employment came in 178,000 jobs below current model estimates, while government employment showed 99,000 additional positions. The net result: 79,000 fewer jobs across the economy, marking the smallest downward adjustment in three years. Wholesale Trade recorded the largest decline. Economists note the Transportation & Warehousing surge contradicts broader softening observed through late 2025 and early 2026.
