Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks resigned Thursday, citing readiness to step away after 37 years of service. Banks characterized his leadership period as transforming border conditions from chaotic to the most secure on record. "Time to pass the reigns, 37 years its time to enjoy the family and life," Banks said of his immediate departure.
His tenure occurred during significant turbulence in border management. A partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown ran from February through late April following congressional disputes over enforcement actions by Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Democratic lawmakers withheld funding approval for the parent agency amid the controversy.
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott praised Banks in a statement, noting the transformation from "chaos to the most secure border ever recorded" during his leadership. Scott congratulated Banks on his second retirement after returning to serve during one of the most challenging periods for border security.
