Telly Arnold founded Houston-based TLA Group LLC to operate non-CDL box trucks. Over three years, she has tested multiple business models—rentals, co-ownership, and financed equipment—each offering hard lessons about hidden costs.
Arnold emphasized that understanding granular cost-per-mile calculations is essential for survival in the business. Her company faced immediate financial surprises upon securing motor carrier authority. Initial insurance deposits reached $4,000 to $5,000 against monthly premiums near $2,500, with deposits required at each renewal cycle.
The largest unexpected expense came from a major mechanical breakdown totaling approximately $10,000. Arnold stressed that repair costs represent the most unpredictable line item for operators. She advises new fleet owners to monitor expenses closely and pivot business models quickly when profitability deteriorates.
