British Columbia's legislature has unanimously passed legislation requiring dashboard cameras on commercial vehicles operating within the province. The Dashboard Cameras in Commercial Vehicles Act, introduced as a private member's bill by MLA Ward Stamer, cleared third reading in late May with cross-party support. Vehicle owners and lessees must install forward-facing cameras and ensure continuous recording during operations. The measure leverages existing definitions under British Columbia's Commercial Transport Act, applying requirements to trucks, buses and vehicle combinations already subject to provincial regulations. Implementation begins six months after royal assent from the lieutenant governor, providing carriers and regulators time to prepare. During this period, provincial authorities will establish detailed regulations governing camera specifications, data management, enforcement mechanisms and compliance procedures. Fleet operators currently lack clarity on technical standards and penalty structures until implementation rules are finalized.
