The Port of Brownsville has finished a $295.2 million infrastructure initiative that deepens its ship channel by 10 feet, positioning the South Texas facility to handle larger vessels and compete for expanded maritime business. The Brazos Island Harbor Improvement Project extended the channel's main navigation route from 42 feet to 52 feet, while entrance and jetty channels increased from 44 feet to 54 feet. Located at the southernmost tip of Texas along the Gulf of Mexico, Brownsville operates the only deep-water seaport on the U.S.-Mexico border. Over 80% of its trade flows to and from Mexico, moving commodities including steel, petroleum products and industrial cargo. Port leadership described the completion as transformational infrastructure, enabling vessels to operate at fuller capacity and enhancing cargo efficiency for cross-border commerce.
