Fuel availability uncertainties may shape the timing and intensity of container shipping's peak season in 2026, with Asia-Europe trades facing the greatest exposure if Strait of Hormuz disruptions persist. While severe fuel shortages have been avoided at major bunkering hubs including Singapore so far, prolonged closure could create shortages within months, according to industry analysts. The Far East relies heavily on oil normally transiting the Strait, and Europe faces similar vulnerability, though North America remains less exposed initially. Some vessels have added port calls to secure fuel, but supply chain adjustments remain incomplete. Carrier responses to fuel scarcity—including slow-steaming and blanked sailings—would reduce effective capacity when demand rises. Asia-Europe peak season is expected to begin early due to Red Sea diversions extending transit times. This compresses the shipping window before October's Golden Week holiday.
