C.H. Robinson has been cleared as a defendant in a wrongful-death lawsuit stemming from a fatal U-turn crash on the Florida Turnpike that killed three people. The brokerage was dropped from the case roughly two weeks after being named in the suit, after demonstrating it had no involvement with the load or carrier responsible for the wreck. The dismissal removes the only deep-pocketed defendant from the case, leaving the plaintiff's estate without a major financial resource to pursue. The crash involved a driver who had obtained a California commercial driver's license after failing his initial exam and later made a U-turn that resulted in a minivan collision. The incident gained attention during federal enforcement efforts targeting non-domiciled and non-compliant CDL holders. The remaining carrier defendant likely carries only the federally mandated minimum insurance coverage, substantially less than potential civil judgments would require. Federal regulators had been investigating the carrier for violations.
