C.H. Robinson Faces $600M Verdict in Landmark Post-Montgomery Ruling

A Dallas County jury has returned a $600 million verdict against C.H. Robinson, marking the largest collectible nuclear verdict recorded against a freight broker following the U.S. Supreme Court's Montgomery decision earlier this year. The ruling names three defendants: a deceased truck driver, motor carrier Lupus Superior with approximately 50 trucks, and C.H. Robinson. The broker was assigned 23% fault but faces absorbing unpaid shares under shared-fault rules. Lupus Superior carries no more than a couple million dollars of insurance at most. The verdict is significant because it disregarded Lupus Superior's satisfactory FMCSA safety rating—a defense the brokerage industry had heavily relied upon. The carrier maintained its satisfactory rating both before and after the accident. C.H. Robinson disclosed the verdict in an SEC filing and plans to appeal. The judgment has not yet been affirmed by the Dallas County Court judge.
