California is deploying $1 billion to subsidize zero-emission vehicle purchases through a new point-of-sale rebate program. The California Clean Fuel Rewards initiative will target electric medium and heavy-duty trucks, with the state granting authorized retailer status to truck dealerships that meet program requirements. The program is expected to begin at the end of June. Funding derives from the state's Low Carbon Fuel Standard, a credit-and-mandate system established in 2011 to incentivize lower-carbon transportation fuels including renewable diesel. The LCFS operates as a trading market where companies meeting carbon reduction targets either generate credits through low-carbon fuel consumption or purchase credits from others. Current credit prices hover near $65-$70 per metric ton, down from historical highs near $200 per ton. The California Air Resources Board will oversee the program, which is expected to become the largest utility-administered electric truck rebate initiative in the state.
