A former barber who left a 28-year career to enter trucking five and a half years ago is sharing lessons learned about box truck operations. Victor Newton abandoned his established barbershop to purchase a $10,000 box truck with 500,000 miles. A viral video headline claiming $20,000 monthly earnings sparked his interest. Box trucks under 26,000 pounds do not require a commercial driver's license, which appealed to Newton since he had no desire to return to classroom training for a CDL. However, Newton has since faced bad driver hires, repair bills, and harsh treatment from brokers during new-authority seasons. His experience contrasts sharply with online testimonials that omit these hardships. Newton emphasized that aspiring owner-operators misunderstand the actual costs and market conditions faced by small carriers.
