Freight theft imposes hidden costs far exceeding the value of goods lost. A single €5,000 parcel can generate up to €35,000 in total expenses, according to new research. Each euro of direct loss carries four to seven euros in additional costs spanning replacement, reshipping, dispute resolution, and customer compensation. Analysis of 10,000 shipments valued at €5,000 each showed that a 0.1% incident rate would result in €50,000 in stolen goods but €350,000 in hidden costs. TAPA EMEA documented over €1 billion in freight theft losses across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa during an 18-month period ending June 30. Organised crime networks increasingly target specific transport corridors and operators, with gangs traveling hundreds of miles to intercept high-value shipments. Theft methods include curtain slashing, trailer theft from facilities, and cyber-enabled fraud using phishing and fraudulent documentation.
