U.S. cargo theft incidents totaled 574 in the first quarter of 2026, averaging 6.4 thefts daily and marking a 6% decrease from the prior year. However, security specialists warn the apparent improvement masks escalating criminal sophistication. Quarter-over-quarter, incidents fell 25% compared to the typical 34% seasonal decline recorded in the same period last year. Deceptive pick-up thefts—where criminals use forged credentials and carrier impersonation to fraudulently collect shipments—surged 31% year-over-year, accounting for 10% of all incidents. California accounted for nearly half of these cases, with Illinois, Indiana, and New Jersey emerging as additional hotspots. Organized criminal networks are increasingly investing in fraud infrastructure and targeting high-value cargo through sophisticated schemes. Traditional security measures cannot prevent these attacks. Industry experts recommend shippers strengthen verification protocols for all shipment-related transactions.
