Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney cautioned Alberta against pursuing independence, drawing parallels to the United Kingdom's 2016 Brexit vote. Speaking in Ottawa Monday, Carney described the separatist movement as a "dangerous bluff" that could produce unintended consequences. The prime minister headed the Bank of England when Britain voted to leave the EU. He said voters often underestimate the permanence of such decisions. "They're still, 10 years later, trying to undo what people didn't think they were voting for," he said. Alberta's provincial government announced plans for a fall referendum on independence following months of campaigning by the Stay Free Alberta movement, which gathered over 300,000 signatures. The non-binding vote would determine whether to proceed with a second, binding separation referendum.
