CBP Seizes $9.5M Methamphetamine Hidden in Detergent Shipment at Texas Border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted over 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine concealed within a commercial detergent load at the Roma International Bridge in Texas. A 2012 tractor-trailer arrived from Mexico on January 11, and CBP directed it to secondary inspection. Officers deployed nonintrusive scanning equipment and canine teams to examine the shipment. They discovered 240 bundles containing 1,071 pounds of suspected methamphetamine with an estimated street value exceeding $9.5 million. CBP seized the contraband following the discovery. CBP Port Director Andres Guerra stated that drug smugglers try to hide in plain sight, but CBP officers remain vigilant through technology and experience. The driver and tractor-trailer were transferred to the Roma Police Department for criminal investigation. The seizure underscores how commercial freight channels can be exploited to move substantial drug quantities across international borders within declared shipments.
