CBS and Paramount reversed course on copyright enforcement Monday, allowing Stephen Colbert's viral public access television appearance to circulate freely across social media platforms. Colbert concluded an 11-year run hosting "The Late Show" Friday before hosting the hour-long parody episode for Monroe Community Media in Michigan. The program featured musician Jack White as a deadpan sidekick and generated widespread online distribution. CBS had issued copyright notices targeting unauthorized reposts on social platforms, citing contractual approval limits to three YouTube channels: The Late Show, Monroe Community Media and Colbert's personal account. The broadcaster said it maintains standard practices protecting copyrighted content from network talent. However, CBS announced Monday it would not pursue further enforcement action against the episode specifically, permitting unrestricted distribution across competing digital platforms.
