The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Thursday that no hantavirus cases have been identified in the United States, though health officials are actively monitoring 41 individuals for potential infection. The agency assessed public health risk as minimal despite an ongoing outbreak linked to a cruise ship that has claimed three lives. The World Health Organization documented 11 total cases associated with the outbreak, with eight confirmed through laboratory testing. Health experts noted the Andes strain circulating in the outbreak does not transmit readily between humans, distinguishing it from Covid-19, measles and influenza. However, additional confirmed cases could surface in coming weeks due to the virus's extended incubation period. Public health officials warned that staffing reductions at the CDC have exposed weaknesses in crisis response capabilities.
