The Port of Charleston is upgrading its automotive cargo operations to capitalize on South Carolina's growing vehicle manufacturing sector. The South Carolina Ports Authority plans to enhance rail infrastructure and vessel parking at its North Charleston Terminal, with upgrades expected to complete in 2028. A nearby paper mill site will be demolished this summer to support the expansion. The Columbus Street Terminal currently handles over 250,000 vehicles annually. The improvements will support just-in-time supply chains for automakers relocating parts operations to the region. South Carolina's automotive appeal stems from its available workforce, supplier network, rail connections, and expansion-ready land. Motor vehicles and parts represented the state's top export commodity in 2025. South Carolina captured 18 percent of U.S. completed passenger vehicle sales—the highest share among all states. The port also manages construction equipment and oversized cargo including buses and trailers.
