A federal jury in Chicago awarded $49.5 million Wednesday to the family of Samya Stumo, who died in Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in 2019. Stumo, 24, was killed in the second of two Boeing 737 MAX crashes that occurred within months of each other and claimed 346 lives total. The verdict resolves one of the final cases from the crashes. Boeing had already admitted responsibility, making the trial solely about compensatory damages. The jury awarded $21 million for Stumo's experience during the fatal flight, $16.5 million for loss of companionship and $12 million for the family's grief. Boeing previously reached a Justice Department agreement to avoid criminal prosecution and settled dozens of lawsuits from crash victims' families under confidential terms.
