Spot rates for containerized shipments from China to India have retreated 10-20% as festival-season purchasing momentum fades. A Shanghai-to-Nhava Sheva 40ft container now trades at approximately $3,200, down from $3,800 one month prior. Shanghai-to-Chennai rates similarly fell to $3,200 per 40ft from $3,900. Regional pricing showed comparable declines: Hong Kong-Nhava Sheva dropped to $3,600 from $3,800, while Singapore-Nhava Sheva eased 5% to $3,400. Hong Kong-Chennai rates slipped 15% to $3,300 per box. Despite the correction, carrier executives cautioned against interpreting the pullback as evidence of a broader downturn. Port congestion persists as a significant operational constraint, particularly at Khor Fakkan and Nhava Sheva, where vessel bunching has created berthing window pressure. Infrastructure challenges continue to strain Asia-India-Middle East services.
