Container freight rates from China to India have climbed sharply in recent weeks as Indian importers boost cargo bookings for vessel space. Shanghai to Nhava Sheva spot rates have jumped 25 to 30 percent since late May, with carriers quoting $2,300 per twenty-foot unit and $2,400 per forty-foot box, up from $1,800 and $1,900 one month prior. Shanghai-Chennai rates posted steeper gains, with twenty-foot containers rising nearly 50 percent to $1,800 per teu from $1,200, while forty-foot boxes climbed to the same level from approximately $1,400. Industry participants attribute the surge to seasonal factors, as Indian importers typically accelerate shipments ahead of the festival season beginning in August and September. Strong trade volumes between the nations across industrial and consumer goods categories continue supporting demand. The rate strength persists despite additional capacity entering the tradelane, including new shuttle services launched by carriers such as CULines.
