Container freight rates from China to India have more than doubled since July as carriers redirected capacity to higher-margin east-west services, straining vessel availability on the intra-Asia tradelane. Shanghai to JNPA spot rates climbed 20% since late August, reaching approximately $3,700 per teu and $3,850 per 40ft. Shanghai-Chennai bookings showed steeper gains, rising 25% to $3,600 per teu and $3,900 per 40ft. Indian imports from China reached $132 billion in fiscal 2025-26, up 16% year-over-year, with the first five months of the current fiscal period showing a 27% surge to $65 billion. Manufacturing expansion and production-linked incentive programs are driving demand for intermediate components, electronics sub-assemblies and capital machinery from Chinese suppliers, making the route increasingly critical for container lines despite operational challenges.
