Chinese shipping operators are converting bulk carriers into container vessels at an accelerating pace, bypassing multi-year delays in newbuilding orders. Cosco is retrofitting two Diamond 53-type Supramax vessels into 2,500 teu boxships, with conversions completing between Q3 and Q4 this year. The conversion includes removing onboard cranes and elevating the wheelhouse by two decks to enable stacking of up to seven container rows. X-Press Feeders will charter the pair for 18 to 24 months at $27,000 per day. Separately, Shenzhen Qianhai Radiant Shipping completed conversion of the Chan Xin 66, a 2012-built 80,000 dwt Kamsarmax, into a 3,600 teu container ship—the largest project of its kind. Renamed Guang Qi De Er Ta, the vessel entered service on 10 June after a five-month conversion involving extensive hull structural work and cargo hold reconstruction. With major shipbuilders booked through 2029 and greenfield yards requiring two years lead time, the conversion strategy allows carriers to capitalize on strong charter demand while awaiting newbuildings.
