Chinese containerized exports to the United States jumped 35% year-over-year in May, the strongest performance since March 2021, following a February Supreme Court decision invalidating tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The ruling prompted the Trump administration to implement a 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, reducing China's average tariff rate from 32% to 24%. High-tech goods drove the surge, with integrated circuit exports climbing 110% and overall high-tech exports rising 50% in May. Strong demand for solar power equipment and semiconductors fueled shipments. Transpacific shipping rates benefited from the activity. Shanghai-US West Coast routes gained 12%. China's broader export performance remained robust, rising 19% in May.
