Citadel achieved significant gains across its major funds in July, capitalizing on a recovery in risk assets and a discounted acquisition of holdings from the collapsed Situational Awareness hedge fund. The firm's flagship Wellington multistrategy fund returned 5.9% for the month, its strongest performance since 2022, bringing year-to-date gains to 12%. Citadel's tactical trading fund, which combines discretionary equity investing with quantitative strategies, surged 11.2% in July for a 27% year-to-date return. Both the tactical and equities funds posted their best monthly performances on record. Citadel acquired the bulk of Situational Awareness's public stock portfolio late last month following the fund's rapid collapse. Steep losses and subsequent margin calls forced the hedge fund to unwind positions. The purchases at significant discounts positioned Citadel to benefit as markets rebounded through month-end.
