North American Class 8 truck orders climbed to 21,300 units in September, an 18% month-over-month increase and 3% gain compared to the prior year. The uptick reflects fleet demand for model-year 2027 equipment as manufacturers transitioned their order books. Year-to-date orders through September reached 263,499 units, up 95% versus the prior year period, with rolling 12-month orders at 351,244 units. Underlying demand remained solid, supported by fleet replacement cycles, capacity constraints and improving freight rates. The shift came as EPA 2027 nitrogen oxide pre-buy incentives ended and surcharge-free 2026 model slots sold out. Manufacturers are adopting varied compliance strategies, including nonconformance penalties, creating pricing uncertainty for fleets. NCPs could add $6,000 to $7,000 per truck versus $8,000 to $12,000 for fully compliant engines.
