Class8 released a comprehensive analysis of nearly 3.3 million unload events from 68,340 commercial trucks across 11,066 locations to identify potential theft indicators. The study employs a three-stage detection system beginning with axle weight telemetry from original equipment manufacturers to spot significant load reductions while vehicles are stationary. Satellite imagery analysis follows, distinguishing between legitimate facilities like warehouses and distribution centers versus anomalous locations including remote areas and roadside pull-offs. A final behavioral layer applies additional weighting for off-hours activity, geographic clustering patterns and deviations from established vehicle routing. Each event receives a suspicion score from 0 to 1. CEO Chris Atkinson emphasized axle weight data initiates investigations but operates alongside proprietary validation metrics rather than standalone.
