CMA CGM has expanded its fleet of 6,000 teu containerships with a newbuilding contract for eight vessels at Hengli Heavy Industries, scheduled for 2028 delivery. The French carrier currently operates six ships of this class: two owned vessels and four chartered from Belgian provider CMB. Eastern Pacific Shipping is building a pair of 6,000 teu ships at the same yard for charter to CMA CGM, supplementing four vessels ordered earlier. Global Ship Lease confirmed orders for ten 6,200 teu ships at Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering for 2028-2030 delivery. Newbuild pricing for 6,000 teu vessels stands around $90 million, while smaller feeder vessels ranging from 1,100 to 1,900 teu cost between $28 million and $35 million. High oil prices and a relatively low orderbook for feeder vessels are encouraging investment in new tonnage, with feeder vessel orderbook-to-fleet ratios at just 18% of the active fleet.
