CMA CGM has withdrawn from negotiations to acquire a 49% stake in Rail Logistics Europe (RLE), the freight arm of French state rail operator SNCF, according to French media reports from August 3, 2026.

Neither CMA CGM nor SNCF would comment on the development. Industry observers said the withdrawal reflects longstanding differences between the parties over deal structure and governance.

CMA CGM Chairman Rodolphe Sadé signaled early interest was limited to RLE's maritime container operations rather than all business units. SNCF sought a partner willing to invest across its entire freight portfolio.

Sources attributed the breakdown to strategic misalignment and a reported personality clash between SNCF Chairman Jean Castex and Sadé. The two leaders reportedly met three times, with tensions evident at each meeting. Castex also reportedly declined to share decision-making authority proportional to CMA CGM's investment stake, despite the multi-hundred million-euro bid being relatively modest for the shipping line.
