CMA CGM has secured a contract to manage air cargo operations at Damascus Airport, expanding the French shipping giant's presence in Syria beyond its existing control of Latakia port. The deal was formalized during a French presidential delegation visit to Damascus this week, marking deepened economic cooperation between France and Syria. Since 2022, CMA CGM has built its air freight capabilities, with eight A350 cargo aircraft on order for delivery beginning in late 2027. Syria's aviation sector continues recovery efforts following years of international isolation. Direct European service to Damascus is gradually resuming, with Syrian Airlines launching Amsterdam-Damascus flights this month and a Berlin route planned for August. The aviation authority reported 12 carriers have resumed operations to the country as of June.
