Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche faced immediate criticism from Republican lawmakers over a $1.8 billion Department of Justice fund created this week. The fund stems from a settlement related to President Donald Trump's $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service. It is designed to compensate individuals who claim they experienced prosecutorial overreach during the previous administration, potentially affecting hundreds of people charged or convicted in connection with the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the former Senate majority leader, denounced the initiative shortly after Blanche met with GOP senators to address concerns. "So the nation's top law enforcement official is asking for a slush fund to pay people who assault cops. Utterly stupid, morally wrong – Take your pick," McConnell said. Opposition has grown in Congress regarding the fund's purpose. Blanche told lawmakers the fund money is "not going toward people who attack policemen and people of authority."
