Brian Gorton is retiring as president and chief operating officer of Conrail effective November 1, 2026, Norfolk Southern announced. Gorton has led the Mount Laurel, New Jersey-based terminal and switching railroad since 2021. The operation is jointly owned by Norfolk Southern and CSX. Gorton previously spent more than six years at Union Pacific, where he rose to general manager. In his LinkedIn announcement, Gorton described his Conrail leadership as one of the most rewarding experiences of his railroad career. Norfolk Southern praised Gorton's stewardship, noting his emphasis on safety and operational excellence strengthened the organization. The railroad said it has initiated a search for Gorton's successor.
