Americans for Prosperity is targeting Congress with a six-figure digital advertising campaign to permanently eliminate the Jones Act, the century-old maritime law requiring U.S.-flag vessels for domestic cargo transport.
The advocacy organization, backed by Koch Industries, plans paired digital ads and grassroots letter-writing efforts to pressure lawmakers. Koch Industries generates $125 billion in annual revenue across petroleum refining, chemicals, and fertilizer production, and would benefit substantially from repeal.
President Trump temporarily suspended the Jones Act in March after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz. The waiver was extended to 90 days, allowing foreign-flag ships to operate between U.S. ports. The suspension provided modest economic benefits through expanded shipping options but did not significantly lower consumer fuel prices immediately.
Americans for Prosperity argues the law artificially inflates costs for fuel, food, and energy. The campaign coincides with rising consumer price concerns ahead of midterm elections, framing repeal as an affordability solution for American families.
