Container Lines Impose Heavy Surcharges as Indian Export Demand Surges

Shipping lines are capitalizing on elevated capacity demand from Indian exporters. They are implementing substantial surcharges across key tradelanes. Container freight rates from India to North America and Europe have reached their highest levels since the Red Sea disruptions began.

CMA CGM introduced a $1,500 per container peak season surcharge for cargo moving to North Europe and the Mediterranean, effective immediately. The French carrier previously imposed a $1,000 per box surcharge on India-Red Sea routes beginning July 18 and announced a $5,000 per container charge on US east coast and Gulf coast shipments starting August 15.

MSC implemented a $500 per container congestion surcharge on Indian imports from North Europe. The carrier cited persistent terminal congestion and inland delays at major Indian ports including JNPA and Mundra. Port congestion has intensified due to additional transhipment volumes generated by Persian Gulf disruptions.
