Container Ship Orderbook Swells to 40% of Global Fleet, Raising Rate Pressure Concerns

The global containership orderbook has reached approximately 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units against an operating fleet of 33.8 million TEUs. This creates an orderbook-to-fleet ratio of 38.7%. This year's expected fleet growth of 4.2% outpaces anticipated container trade expansion of 3-4%, signaling potential capacity oversupply. Second-quarter ordering alone totaled 866,000 TEUs across 164 vessels. The orderbook composition heavily favors large mainline vessels, with 55.2% representing ships of 10,000 TEUs or larger destined for Asia-Europe and trans-Pacific routes. Feeder and intermediate segments present a more balanced supply picture. However, the median age of the oldest 25% of vessels in several sub-10,000-TEU segments ranges from 21 to 28 years. Modern feeder tonnage remains scarce despite selective ordering in the 1,000-2,000 TEU range during the quarter.
