Container spot freight rates fell this week on major east-west routes, marking the first decline since late April and signaling a shift in market dynamics. The World Container Index recorded Shanghai-Rotterdam dropping 1% to $4,873 per 40ft, while Shanghai-Genoa fell 3% to $6,300 per 40ft. The weakness emerged despite carrier attempts to maintain pricing through new freight-all-kinds rates ranging from $7,900 to $8,500 per 40ft. Aggressive rate cuts by major carriers including Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, and CMA CGM pushed quotes down to $4,800-$4,900 per 40ft for late July sailings. Current offers range from $4,500 to $7,000 per 40ft on a downward trend. Forward indicators reflected the pressure, with the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index declining 3.5% on North Europe routes and 4.5% on Mediterranean services.
