Container spot rates declined across major east-west trade lanes this week, signaling peak season pricing has begun to moderate. Drewry's World Container Index recorded losses on all three primary headhaul routes. The Shanghai-Rotterdam corridor fell 1% to $4,824 per 40-foot container, while Shanghai-Genoa slipped 5% to $5,988 per 40ft. Forwarders anticipate further declines through August as carriers introduce spot discounts out of Asia. However, freight experts caution that rate erosion will likely remain gradual rather than steep. Carriers are maintaining discipline through controlled capacity allocation agreements, with some flexibility for spot bookings. The Shanghai Containerised Freight Index readings suggest this decline will continue in coming weeks.
