Container freight spot rates edged higher this week on major trade routes, with the Shanghai-Rotterdam leg climbing 5% to $4,933 per 40-foot container and Shanghai-Genoa rising 2% to $6,463, according to weekly benchmarks. Demand held firm across trades despite the absence of carrier-led pricing initiatives. Carriers including MSC and CMA CGM plan rate increases next week targeting North Europe and Mediterranean routes. MSC is seeking $7,700 per 40ft, while CMA CGM is targeting $7,000 to North Europe and $7,900–$8,500 to the Mediterranean. However, forwarders remain skeptical these levels will hold, citing widespread discounts and readily available capacity. Spot rates for early July sailings failed to exceed $6,000 per 40ft on Asia-Europe, with competing carriers offering rates between $4,800 and $6,500. Industry analysts note growing pressure on pricing sustainability as the peak season faces potential headwinds.
